Antwerp s Ethnographic Museum is the one of the newest additions to the city s already rich cultural landscape. The collection is an exquisite mix of objects from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. An important part of the museum s collection dates from the middle of the 19th century, though Congolese and Central African artefacts were mostly added at the beginning of the 20th century following Belgium s colonial enterprise.Check out the sculpted wooden pole of the Asmat, over five metres high, and the delicately carved masks from New Ireland, among the oldest pieces of the collection. For tribal jewellery lovers, there are examples on display from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Solomon Islands.Colourful feather headdresses, feather ornaments and masks show how the people of the Amazon would dress up for ceremonial occasions. There are also stone sculptures and earthenware from Mexico and textiles from the Andes, all dating from the pre-Columbian era.
